The Chicago Sun-Times will feature an in-depth medical tourism feature by writer Eric Paul Erickson in their November 27 Sunday travel section. The Thanksgiving Weekend article delves into the growing medical tourism industry in Asia and the ability of Americans to travel overseas for medical procedures for a fraction of the domestic cost without sacrificing safety or quality. It will also be available at http://www.SunTimes.com.
The article addresses procedures, costs and accommodations as well as the fears of undergoing surgery far away from home. It features interviews with patients, doctors and administrators as well as a look at the culture of the region, including the practice of prescription free medication. The Sun-Times will feature photographs documenting the way of life in Malaysia and Thailand.
Earlier in 2005 Erickson documented the trip of two American women as they traveled to Malaysia for cosmetic surgery and was given unprecedented access to hospital facilities. He interviewed Penang Adventist Hospital staff, doctors, and administrators as well as touring Georgetown and the surrounding area with a film crew, investigating accommodations and activities available to medical tourists. While in Asia, Erickson kept a blog at http://www.medicaltourmalaysia.com which received thousands of visitors from around the world.
Since returning, Erickson has been featured on National Public Radio-WPRs Here on Earth with Jean Feraca (http://www.wpr.org/hereonearth), he was a guest at a medical tourism industry news conference hosted by Malaysian Ambassador H.E. DatoGhazzali bin Sheikh Abdul Khalid in Washington, D.C. and his reports have been featured in numerous media outlets.
During his career, Erickson has worked for the Chicago Tribunes City News Service, the Roswell Daily Record and CNS News.com. Currently he works as a freelance writer in Chicago where his pieces have appeared regularly in the Chicago Tribune, Hollinger newspapers and other area newspapers and magazines, as well as national publications. His articles and photos have continually received national recognition and distribution. Erickson also serves as the Special Projects Director for the Society for Cultural and Social Exploration (http://www.exploration-society.org) and will be traveling to Seoul, Korea this winter to lecture to college and university students by special request of The Korea Times, his second trip this year.
During his adventures Erickson has been given unusual access to many areas, including participation in the Chicago Police Departments Street Survival course, being given clearance to observe anti-terrorism and explosives training in New Mexico, interviewing secluded Poor Clare nuns and spending Spring Training on the field with the Chicago Cubs in Arizona.
