Patients Beyond Borders: Turkey Edition to be launched at Chicago Medical Tourism Conference

The Chicago Sun-Times will feature an in-depth medical tourism feature by writer Eric Paul Erickson in their November 27 Sunday travel section. The Thanksgiving Weekend article delves into the growing medical tourism industry in Asia and the ability of Americans to travel overseas for medical procedures for a fraction of the domestic cost without sacrificing safety or quality. The article addresses procedures, costs and accommodations as well as the fears of undergoing surgery far away from home. It features interviews with patients, doctors and administrators as well as a look at the culture of the region, including the practice of prescription free medication. The Sun-Times will feature photographs documenting the way of life in Malaysia and Thailand.

Earlier in 2005 Erickson documented the trip of two American women as they traveled to Malaysia for cosmetic surgery and was given unprecedented access to hospital facilities. He interviewed Penang Adventist Hospital staff, doctors, and administrators as well as touring Georgetown and the surrounding area with a film crew, investigating accommodations and activities available to medical tourists. Since returning, Erickson has been featured on National Public Radio-WPRs Here on Earth with Jean Feraca (http://www.wpr.org/hereonearth), he was a guest at a medical tourism industry news conference hosted by Malaysian Ambassador H.E.
