Medical Tourism is Good Therapy for the Hotel Industry

Bangkok, Thailand (PRWEB) April 22, 2009

Over the past decade, Asia has been the preferred destination for many people seeking less expensive but high quality medical treatments. The increase is partially due to high medical costs in western countries like the United States and United Kingdom. Specialized treatments, surgeries and therapies are being offered in Asia at a fraction of the cost, yet with bigger perks when it comes to hospitality and patient comfort. The hospitality industry has recognized this growing trend and is beginning to target travelers looking to have their treatments performed overseas. Agoda.com, an online hotel booking service, confirmed the bourgeoning nature of this type of tourism and the positive effect it has on the hotel industry.

A study by Deloitte Consulting in 2008 notes that medical tourists to Asia are estimated to reach 10 million by 2012. Asian countries like Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia are favorites among medical tourists mainly because of the significantly cheaper health care which can cost as little as 10 percent of comparable care in the US, but still provide quality treatment(s) by medical experts who have been trained in the US, UK and other western countries. Most medical tourists confirmed that the medical and travel expense combined are still much cheaper than costs incurred paying for treatments alone in their home countries.

A favorable exchange rate of the US Dollar to the Thai Baht makes medical procedures an incredible value to foreign visitors. Cheaper medical costs mean more money is available for family members and friends to accompany the patients. It’s those family and friends that seek accommodation near the hospitals so they can visit the patients yet at the same time have a comfortable stay affording them access to the rest of the city’s attractions. It seems obvious medical tourism has tertiary advantages to other travel-related industries.

Thailand is well known for its warm and generous hospitality in addition to its well-educated medical community and modern facilities; Bangkok’s Bumrungrad Hospital, whose patient-base is 50% foreign nationals, was the first to receive JCI Accreditation in Asia. Medical tourism is not only set to boom in Bangkok, but also other areas in Thailand with a high concentration of foreign tourists. Bangkok General Hospital, where Japanese and Middle Eastern nationals make up a significant portion of the inpatient list, is now present in major centers like Pattaya, Hua Hin, and Phuket.

Michael Kenny, CEO of Agoda remarked, “We are definitely seeing a rise in medical tourism to Asia. For instance, our hotel partners in Bangkok such as the Ariyasomvilla and FuramaXclusive, which are both located very close to Bumrungrad Hospital, confirmed that 30 – 40% of their guests are either medical tourists or their family members and friends. Following this trend, Agoda has made improvements to our site to make it easier to identify hotels which are near to popular hospitals, as well as negotiate long-stay discounts at a number of these hotels.”

Operations Manager of FuramaXclusive Sukhumvit, Mr. Pomchai Chairungsinun, addressed his hotel’s continuing influx of medical tourists by saying, “Medical tourist make up about 30 – 35% of our clientel each year with June, July and August being our busiest months. The majority of patients usually have families visiting and will therefore request two to three rooms. Medical tourism is highly beneficial for us, as guests will generally stay for at least a week during their checkups and treatments. Our close proximity to Bumrungrad Hospital is a big bonus for visitors to the hospital.”

Malaysia and Singapore are currently promoting their medical tourism industry as well. 35 private hospitals in Malaysia have been identified to promote Malaysia as a medical tourism destination. Hotels like the G Hotel and Berjaya Georgetown Hotel in Penang have begun promoting themselves as medical tourist-friendly hotels, taking advantage of their close proximity to significant institutions like the Gleaneagles Medical Center and Penang Advantist Hospital. Singapore uses its reputation as a clean, modern, technologically advanced country with English as a predominant language, to help calm anxieties of incoming patients looking to take advantage of their world class healthcare. As well, many hospitals are located in and around popular districts with many attractions and nearby hotels. Mount Elizabeth Hospital is located amongst the shopping of Orchard road, surrounded by 4-5 star hotels like the Elizabeth-A Far East Hotel and Meritus Mandarin.

As interest in medical tourism rises, so does the number of hospitals offering services. Unfortunately the inherent risk of choosing an institution that is merely looking to cash-in with substandard facilities increases.

“As with any industry there will be those looking to take advantage of naivety and label themselves as “the top” or “best hospital” for medical tourism. Tourists should be diligent, researching carefully the hospitals and finding out what legal framework exists to protect patient rights. Consideration for the hospital’s recognized accreditations, awards, reputation, facilities and medical staff should be also taken in to account when reviewing institutions.” Agoda’s Michael Kenny added.

With the global economy causing headaches around the world, it isn’t expected the trend of people travelling to find lower costs for medical procedures will be waning any time soon. With the high level of medical expertise, modern facilities, warm hospitality and well located hotels for relatives, SE Asian countries appear well-suited to take advantage of this continuing trend.

Global Alliance Takes First Major Steps for Medical Tourism from America

Washington, DC (PRWEB) April 8, 2005

Each year, as the cost of healthcare in the U.S. continues to rise; an increasing number of Americans are traveling abroad for medical care. Lured by savings of up to 85% off for procedures ranging from cosmetic to cardiac bypass, Americans, up until recently, have taken this risk with almost no support here at home. At a press conference to take place April 11th at the Malaysian Embassy in Washington, DC, USA-based MedRetreat, LLC will announce a global alliance, designed to advocate for Americans and facilitate “medical tourism” to foreign countries.

“The globalization of science, technology, and communications has led to the development of world class healthcare in certain regions of the world, where treatment is provided a fraction of the American cost,” said Judson Anglin, Founder and President of MedRetreat. MedRetreat, LLC is the first American medical tourism company, acting as an advocate for American’s interested in traveling abroad for medical procedures.

Anglin and his partners have traveled to Thailand, Malaysia, Argentina and India, touring hospitals and facilities and compiling research on standards of care, accommodations and the many cultural nuances that affect American travelers in each country. “Americans need an extraordinary level of care and support when traveling,” said Anglin. “That is why we only partner with organizations that offer ‘door to door’ service.” Last year, MedRetreat partnered with Beautiful Holidays, Southeast Asia’s most popular medical tourism company. Beautiful Holidays is known throughout Europe for combining medical treatment with luxury recuperation at 5-star resorts in Malaysia and Thailand.

There are over 44 million uninsured Americans. There are millions more whose health insurance co-pay for a single procedure can be equal to the cost of the entire procedure abroad. Said Anglin: “We are hoping that, through this alliance of nations and service-based organizations, Americans can feel safe and secure traveling abroad for medical care.”

The following representatives will be present to speak and field questions:

H.E. Dato’Ghazzali bin Sheikh Abdul Khalid, Ambassador Of Malaysia, will present an introduction on Malaysia’s strategic global advantage in the growing medical tourism market.

Tederic Mohr, CEO, Penang Adventist Hospital, will present a brief overview of medical facilities, technologies and competencies available to Americans traveling to Malaysia.

Judson Anglin, President & Founder, MedRetreat will introduce MedRetreat, LLC as the first American company to offer medical tourism services, including information, advocacy and facilitation for Americans undergoing medical procedures abroad.

Marloes Giezenaar, Managing Director, Beautiful Holidays, will present a brief overview of the “A to Z” process that Americans experience from arrival to departure.

Katherine Bogardus and Kimberlee Tyner, R.N., recent “medical tourists” will be on hand to share their experiences and answer questions.

New Guide Showcasing Malaysia"s World-Class Medical Tourism Offerings Now Available in Digital Formats

Thailand"s Medical Tourism is Booming - Thailand on its Way to Become Asia"s Medical Hub

New York, NY (PRWEB) November 5, 2009

The Royal Thai Government’s strategy in 2004 for Thailand to become Asia’s medical hub is becoming a reality as Thailand continues to see an increase in medical tourism. With an annual growth rate of 14% for the sector, ahead of the county’s GDP, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Department of Export Promotion (DEP) expects to see two million visitors wanting to take advantage of lower medical treatments by 2010.

In 2008 Research and Markets reported that, although Thailand is faced with tough competition from India and Malaysia, Thailand has treated the highest number of international tourists in Asia. High health care costs, overloaded medical facilities and the fact that Thailand provides the most advanced treatments by internationally trained medical staff are reasons why medical tourists are choosing Thailand. “Thailand’s ultra-new and modern hospitals are less than a decade old and feel more like luxury hotels catering to tourists, than places to treat the infirm” (Tourism Authority of Thailand). The cost for health care in Thailand is about one fifth of what you would pay in the United States or Europe, making it more significant that in 2008, foreign patients generated an estimated $ 6 billion USD for Thailand. According to one international medical travel journal, the Royal Thai Government has put together a five-year plan that aims to double this revenue by 2014.

Deloitte Consulting estimated 750,000 Americans traveled abroad for health care services in 2007, a figure that was expected to double last year, with a forecasted global market expansion of more than 20% annually going forward to 2012. Thailand is ready to meet the growing industry by continuously making sure international standards are met and offering a level of hospitality not found in any other medical center around the world at affordable prices.

People are traveling to Thailand for routine maintenance like dental to cosmetic surgery, gastric bypass surgery and heart surgery. Medical tourists can undergo and recover from many non-invasive procedures during a normal two-week holiday in Thailand. A new guidebook Patients Beyond Borders: Thailand Edition released on Monday by Josef Woodman, CEO of Healthy Travel Media, offers an in-depth overview of Thailand’s international hospitals, selected health travel agents, nearby recovery and guest accommodations, spas, and area travel information so that travelers know where to go in Thailand to get their world-class medical treatment.

Thailand’s rapid growth into becoming Asia’s medical hub is also creating great opportunities in related fields. The medical device sector is continuing to see healthy growth to meet the demands of health care facilities for new upgraded medical machinery and devices. Research and development for tropical diseases like malaria and dengue fever are areas also open for further investment. As Thailand’s medical tourism industry continues to grow, its health care industry will flourish as well.

About the Tourism Authority of Thailand

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) was established in 1960 by the Royal Thai Government to be specifically responsible for tourism promotion. In 1965, TAT opened its first overseas office in New York. Since then, TAT has established 21 offices in different parts of the world including the Los Angeles office. TAT aims to provide the best Thailand traveling information to the public and media members as well as work closely with our travel partners to develop new deals and packages.

Thai Sea Gypsy Islands Get Year Round Access

(PRWEB) August 12, 2005

A new cross border ferry service from Langkawi, Malaysia, to Ko Lipe is opening up Thailand’s Tarutao islands to year round tourism.

The ferry service is the result of government cooperation between the Thailand and Malaysia and the recent opening of a Thai Consulate in Langkawi.

The islands in Thailand’s Tarutao National Park were for centuries famous as a pirate base that made sea travel in the area dangerous. Later they were given by the Thai government to local Sea Gypsies, or Chao Leh people who have roamed the islands for centuries harvesting fish, shellfish, coconuts and plants. These ancient people have their own language, maternal culture and animist religion.

The islands have until now only been accessible by small boat from Satun which operates for 6 months per year. With strong year-round tourism, Langkawi island is expected to provide a steady and growing stream of day-trippers to Ko Lipe and Ko Adang, which will provide a strong economic boost to the Thai islands.

The ferry service already leaves from Telaga Harbour Park in Langkawi for the one-hour trip to Ko Lipe every Saturday. From September 2005, the service will operate daily.

All day island hopping tours stop to enjoy the best snorkeling spots and explore five or more of the 50 islands that comprise the Tarutao National Park.

Alternate tours including scuba diving, game fishing (catch and return), bird watching and eco tours with trained naturalists are offered. All tours are eco-friendly with great care being taken not to damage the unspoiled island environment.

The Tarutao National park islands offer some of Asia’s best underwater coral and marine life. More than 130 species of coral have been identified and a huge variety of colorful tropical fish are abundant. Other marine treats include dolphins, whale sharks, whales, turtles, shellfish and large fish. The area is famous for its crystal clear azure water and sparkling white sand beaches, with many visitors proclaiming them fantasy islands.

LANGKAWI

Langkawi island is one of Malaysia’s leading tourism destinations for honeymooners with idyllic nature, ancient rain forests and mountains, stunning colorful birds, caves, mangroves, a cable car and its own international airport with direct flights from London. It hosts one of Asia leading yachting regattas, a leading international bicycle race and was chosen by Four Seasons Hotels as the perfect Asian destination for their latest hotel and sap which opened here recently to international acclaim.

The opening of a new Thai consulate in Langkawi is sure to make this a favorite venue for visa renewal by expats living in Thailand. The island’s duty free status means that liquor, cigarettes, perfumes and other items are much cheaper than almost anywhere else in Asia.

Access Langkawi by air direct from London, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Flights are expected to start soon from Bangkok and Phuket, and ferry service to Langkawi runs daily year round from Penang, Satun and Alor Star. Star Ferry cruises also stop in Langkawi to enjoy the many sights and experiences the island has to offer.

Limerick man joins house-building effort in Sri Lanka.

LIMERICK, Ireland (PRWEB) September 3, 2005

The longest-lasting impression left on Limerick-man, Kevin Doyle, after returning from tsunami-ravaged Sri Lanka last week, was the resilient politeness of its poverty stricken people and their sincere gratitiude for the help the West is continuing to give them.

“They are a very retiring, self-deprecating people, and despite what has happened to them, always smiling. They call that day the worst day in the history of their country and they are immensely greateful for the help they are continueing to recveive”.

41-year-old Kevin, originally from Lansdowne Park and now the operations project manager with Halifax Insurance Ireland Ltd in Shannon, was the only Irish person to join a UK group on a company-sponsored trip to Sri Lanka to help re-build the many houses that were swept away last Christmas in Thailand, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

“We worked for a charity called Habitat for Humanity which has been building basic housing for homeless people for over 20 years and currently operates in over 100 countries worldwide,” he explained.

The charity’s activities are only just beginning in Sri Lanka but they built their 200,000th house, worldwide, last week. They plan to have 10,000 houses built in Sri Lanka alone by 2007.”

For Kevin, spending eight days in the former surfing resort of Hikkaduwa, near Galle on the South West coast, plastering, tiling and roofing tiny two bed-roomed houses for tsunami survivors, was an eye-opening change from the computers, graphs and suit-clad professionals he normally spends his days with in HIIL in Shannon.

“When I heard about this appeal, I thought it would be an opportunity to do something more concrete and more personal for the victims of the tsunami rather than just sending money. Obviously, it was also an opportunity to see a part of the world that wouldn’t normally feature in my travels.”

Knowing of the billions of euro that have already been pumped into the devastated areas, Kevin expected to see the towns and villages well on their way to getting back to the states they had been prior to the giant wave. But the reality is that that millions of people are still homeless and living in extreme poverty in makeshift houses of waste wood and sheets of tin.

An enormous stumbling block to the rebuilding of the people’s homes is two new laws introduced by the Sri Lankan Government. To aid tourism, no-one can build within a 100 yard metre distance of the shore, so that the beaches look more attractive to tourists which they are again trying to attract. But with much more serious ramifications is the law preventing anyone who cannot prove he owns his plot of land from rebuilding his home.

“As you can imagine, when you have lost everything in the tsunami, including the deeds to your house, that’s pretty difficult to prove,” explains Kevin.

The houses being built by Habitat for Humanity are basic to say the least, according to Kevin, just two rooms, but properly roofed, floored, plastered, painted and tiled. There’s no plumbing or central heating, an outside toilet, but there is electricity.

“But they seemed like palaces to the local people and their gratitude was obvious. While we were there, another house on the scheme was finished and was handed over to a man and his wife. Just the expressions on their faces was unbelievable. They were really, really beaming!”

Asked what had made the biggest impression on him during his stay, Kevin replied that it was two events in the hotel in which the group of 20 was staying.

“When we arrived, all of the staff and the manager were lined up in reception. The manager made a welcoming speech, we were all given garlands of flowers and invited to light a candle each as a representation of the group. I wondered what this was all about and thought they couldn’t be doing this every time guests arrived but then I discovered that we were the first group of this size to stay at the hotel since the tsunami and so we were responsible for so many of the staff getting their jobs back.”

But while this hotel had been barely saved from serious damage by the tsunami, neighbouring hotels were just abandoned shells.

Asked if he would return, Kevin said that he would love to return on a holiday, as Sri Lanka has always relied heavily on its tourism industry and tourists is exactly what they need now to recover.

If you are interested in joining the house building scheme, contact Charity Challenge who organise the logistics, or contact Habitat for Humanity directly. Individuals can pay themselves, or raise ST£1,100 in sponsorship for the eight day trip which includes travel, accommodation and food. Donations can still be made through various charities.http://www.limerick.com.

Patients Beyond Borders Cited in Deloittes Medical Tourism Update and Implications Report

Chapel Hill, NC (PRWEB) December 15, 2009

Patients Beyond Borders, the first comprehensive consumer reference guide for medical tourism, was recently cited in a report, Medical Tourism: Update and Implications, released by the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions. Utilizing information on international medical sites culled by Patients Beyond Borders, the report cites Patients Beyond Borders, alongside the Joint Commission International (JCI), as neutral overseers with important oversight.

Despite current economic conditions, or perhaps because of them, Deloitte is forecasting an annual growth rate of 35%, with an estimated 1.6 million patients crossing borders for medical procedures, commented Josef Woodman, author of Patients Beyond Borders. With the number of JCI-accredited hospitals now approaching 300, top international facilities are poised to receive a growing number of global healthcare consumers.

Patients Beyond Borders is the worlds best-read source of consumer information on medical tourism. Data was culled over a two-year period from hundreds of interviews with international hospitals, clinics, universities, and government agencies, as well as patients, prospective patients, and medical travel facilitators. Woodman has spent more than four years touring 120 medical travel facilities in 14 countries, researching contemporary medical tourism. While we dont always agree with research organizations on the numbers, we do agree the drivers are in place for extraordinary growth in the coming years, says Woodman.

Asian Leadership in Trade and Associated Risks

(PRWEB) January 20, 2006

Asia’s journey from the 1997-98 financial crisis to being one of the world’s most dynamic regions in terms of trade, development and investment activity, can best be termed as a ‘Renaissance’. The world’s centre of economic gravity is shifting towards Asia, as it currently accounts for 27 percent of international trade. This growth is mainly driven by the exemplary performance of the emerging Asian countries, including China, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam. The share of these emerging Asian countries in world trade increased from 13 percent in 1990 to 20 percent in 2004.

The Asian region is gaining significance in merchandise as well as commercial services trade. Asia’s share in world merchandise exports and imports stands at 26.8 percent and 24 percent, respectively. The value of Asia’s merchandise exports and imports shot up by 25 percent and 27 percent, respectively, in 2004. The growth in exports from the region can be attributed to strong demand from the US, and intra-Asian trade, stoked by a recovery in electronics trade.

Exports of commercial services increased at a fast rate of 27 percent in 2004, while imports were up 25 percent during the same period. Asian countries, such as India, China and the Philippines, are the most preferred destination today for outsourcing of business services, such as transaction processing, customer care centers, medical transcription, IT services and application development, high-end analytical services, R&D services, etc. Other commercial services, such as transportation services were strong in 2004, while travel receipts recovered by 31 percent during the year from exceptionally low levels in 2003 (due to the spread of SARS).

Intra-regional trade as a share of total trade went up sharply to 41 percent in 2004, primarily due to intra-industry trade as a result of greater vertical specialisation and relocation of production processes. This is evident in the electronics sector, where capital intensive processes (like production of microchips) are carried out in high-income economies like Singapore and Korea, and labour intensive processes (like assembly of personal computers) are located in low income countries, such as China. Asia has integrated into a global production chain with some cities like Hong Kong and Singapore becoming the hub of manufacturing and trade.

The dynamics of growth and development in Asia is a perfect illustration of how countries have used trade as a means of achieving greater degree of integration with the international economy. Region-specific factors have provided the stimulus for this growth.

The report covers issues like:

-Growth in Central Asia driven by energy sector

-Structural reforms and booming manufacturing and services sectors drive South Asian economies

-Consumption growth and business investment drives growth in Southeast Asia

-China fuels growth in East Asia

-Risks to Trade in Asia

-Asian economies being net importers of energy, will be hard hit by a rise in global oil prices

-Infrastructure gaps exist in growing nations in Asia

-Inflation and interest rate rise would aggravate debt servicing burden and discourage investments

-Exchange Rates volatility hinders private capital inflows

-Outsourcing business prone to information security risk

-Logistics bottleneck might inhibit outsourcing of manufacturing to Asia

-Epidemics can curtail the GDP growth of the region

-Cultural differences can prove to be detrimental to growth

-Terrorism can lead to decreased FDI, decline in tourism, fiscal imbalances and unemployment

-Asia is prone to various kinds of natural disasters

Former Director General of Marketing and Communications, CNTA is Speaking at WTM-ChinaContact Conference on Bilateral Tourism Relations with China this November 6th

(PRWEB) October 4, 2006

The upcoming WTM-ChinaContact conference on bilateral tourism relations with China, Chinathe future of Travel is gearing up to be the most comprehensive collection of knowledge and expertise on Chinas tourism sector ever assembled outside China.

A keynote speaker and chairperson of the session on bilateral tourism, Mrs. Shen Hui Rong, has until recently held the position of Marketing & Communications Director General at China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) in Beijing. For over 27 years, Mrs. Shen played key roles in Chinas rapidly developing tourism industry. She implemented Chinas recovery program post-SARS and has negotiated tourism agreements, known as ADS, with overseas destinations. Her work in this area earned her the nickname Ms. ADS.

We have asked Mrs. Shen about Chinas approach to outbound tourism and the role they see it playing in overall economic growth and social benefit to China.

When asked about the future potential of outbound tourism from China, Shen Hui Rong has told us “As usual when something is big in China, the numbers mentioned are staggering. The World Tourism Organization forecasts that China will become the worlds fourth-largest source of outbound tourists by 2020 with more than 100 million departures each year. Outbound travel from China jumped 50-fold in 20 years. In 1997, when the first batch of ADS destinations were approved including Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions, only 5.32 million trips were made. The number became 16.6 million in 2002, 20.22 million in 2003 despite the SARS epidemic, 28.85 million in 2004 and 31 million in 2005. It is expected that 2006 will still see 34 million overseas trips (10% increase). China has already replaced Japan as Asias number one outbound travel market.”

According to the survey released in the Annual Report of China Outbound Tourism Development 2005, white collar and company managerial staff are the main source of outbound travel, making up half of the market. This is especially the case in Beijing and Shanghai. 80% outbound travellers are aged between 18-50 with high education. 45% of outbound travellers are from three-member families while couples or singles comprise 30%.

The cost of staying/eating in the UK and Europe is quite high. While this is a factor in people’s travel choices, at present the visa issue is still the major barrier for Chinese travellers to Europe. Since last July EU nations carried out a stricter visa policy for Chinese tourists and as a result the number of Chinese tourists to Europe has not increased by much.

At present, the most popular tours to Europe are:

14 days trip to Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy and Holland; 12 days trip to Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Vatican and Austria; 9 days trip to Switzerland, Finland and Belgium or Switzerland, Germany and Austria.

11 days trip to Spain and Portugal; 9 days trip to Nordic countries are the most aspirational products.

Most of the tours are city based if they travel to long-haul destinations but some Chinese golfers like to go to St. Andrews, which is included in tour packages.

Bilateral agreements and cooperation will enhance two-way traffic. The more people travel between two countries, the better understanding each other will attain. This will reduce the differences and cultural gap to further develop friendship between the two peoples.

World Travel Market is an important annual global travel trade exhibition organised by Reed Travel Exhibitions, a leader in travel related fairs around the world. This is the first time that WTM is holding a full day conference on Chinas tourism industry. It is cooperating with ChinaContact to produce a high quality event with rich content, high quality speakers and fantastic networking opportunities. It is to be the first time that the theme of bilateral tourism development with China is discussed and analyzed at senior level in Europe. As Chinas tourism sector continues to overwhelm expectations to grow faster than its economy, this topic will remain a hot issue for many years to come. Chinathe future of Travel will continually update the international travel community on the dynamic pace of change in China and the ways that companies and destinations can benefit from this astounding destination / market.

ChinaContact is a dedicated market entry specialist for Chinas tourism sector, involved in consulting, investments, luxury destination marketing and public relations, events management and conference productions.

50% Increase of Russians Rushing to Malaysia

(PRWEB) May 23, 2008

The growth in Russian tourist arrivals has been steady since the beginning of 2008 with 7.8% growth recorded in Jan 08 (compared to Jan 07), 32.6% in Feb 08 (compared to Feb 07) and 50.8% in Mar 08 (compared to Mar 07).

In total over 1.7 million tourists visited the Southeast Asian country in April 2008 and a 0.8% increase for the period Jan – Apr 08 was recorded compared to the same period last year. Overall Singapore remained the biggest tourist generating market for Malaysia with 867,067 Singaporean nationals visiting the country in April 08; the UK came in at 9th place with 31,952 visitors, 24.5% growth compared to April 07.

These increases in arrivals certainly confirm Malaysia’s worldwide appeal as a top tourism destination and is increasing the amount of people purchasing property in Malaysia. The soaring Malaysian property market is fuelled by ongoing economic growth; a naturally-growing population averaging 1.8% long-term; increasing migration from country to city; the growth of the state-sponsored pension fund; expansion of economic activity by nearby Singapore; and the 10-year-old “Malaysia- My Second Home” programme.

Steve Worboys, MD of Malaysia property agent Experience International, comments, “The increase in tourist arrivals both overall and in the Russian sector spells good news for the Malaysian economy.

We are seeing more and more people visiting this beautiful nation on holiday, falling in love with the people, the culture and the investment opportunities available and taking advantage of the Malaysia My Second Home Programme to purchase a property in Malaysia. The coastal region of Sepang in particular is receiving great interest. Here buyers can purchase a 1 bedroom apartment from just

GolfAsian, Named As Official Golf Tour Operator For Vietnam"s Ho Chi Minh Golf Trail

Saigon, Vietnam (PRWEB) October 8, 2008

Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh Golf Trail, just a year old but already Asia’s most talked about golfing itinerary, has retained Indochina’s largest golf tour operator Golfasian, as the Trail’s official tour operator partner.

Starting October 1, the Ho Chi Minh Golf Trail visitors to the can book their entire itineraries through Golfasian, which last year enabled more than 3,000 golfer visits (some 860 separate parties) to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia.

“Handling ‘travelers’ and handling ‘golfers who travel’ are two very different things,” said Jim Sullivan, director of Mandarin Media/Asia-Pacific, which created the Ho Chi Minh Golf Trail in 2007 and continues its administration. “By directing all booking inquires to Golfasian, we are putting golfers in the hands of people who know this part of the world intimately, who understand the logistics involved, and who have created thousands of these itineraries — not just last year, but over the course of 15 years in this business.”

Over the last 10 years, Golfasian has facilitated the visit of 11,979 golfers to Thailand; for the 2007-2008 season alone, which ended in September, this amounted to 10,500 room nights at hotels and 16,500 rounds of golf, according to Golfasian Managing Director Mark Siegel. “In our most recent year of operation in Thailand,” Siegel said, “we generated more than 16,500 rounds of golf. In Vietnam, we expect to build up to this level within 5 years.”

“Golfasian will be a boon for the member and lodging links of the Ho Chi Minh Golf Trail, and for golf tourism in Vietnam in general,” added Sullivan. “We’re committed to improving the attraction and practicality of playing the Ho Chi Minh Golf Trail. We’re improving the product — the new Montgomerie Links Vietnam in Danang is scheduled to join the Trail in early 2009, along with other branded sponsors — and our partnership with Golfasian enables golfers to better access that product.”

The Ho Chi Minh Golf Trail doesn’t merely assemble Vietnam’s best golfing venues in a North-South fashion, like its namesake trail. It pairs these first-class clubs and resorts with some of the most remarkable, luxury accommodations in world golf, while connecting golfers themselves to all the Trail’s cultural offerings and transport options through its partnership with Golfasian.

The golfing world has taken notice. Hundreds of stories have been written about the Ho Chi Minh Golf Trail since its launch July 1, 2007, including recent feature coverage in publications like the New York Times (March 9, 2008), Outside’s Go (May 2008) and the Asian Wall Street Journal (April 2008). In December 2007, the International Golf Travel Writers Association pegged Vietnam as its “Undiscovered Destination of the Year”, based on the country’s allure, course quality, and standard of accommodation. The award was a crowning moment in a pivotal year for Vietnam golf — the Ho Chi Minh Golf Trail launched on July 1, and two months later came formation of the Vietnam Golf Association.

“Vietnam has really come of age as a tourist destination during the last two years,” said Golfasian’s Siegel, noting another larger milestone: Vietnam’s admission to the World Trade Organization in late 2006. “We’ve seen a huge spike in interest regarding golf in Vietnam, thanks in large part to the Ho Chi Minh Golf Trail. But there’s a difference between reading a story about how wonderful a golf destination is and actually having that experience. That’s what we deliver: the first-class experience and dependability traveling golfers expect.”

Golfing stops on the Trail include:

Chi Linh Star Golf Club, a dazzling 18 outside Hanoi and recent host to the Asian PGA Tour’s Carlsberg Masters, with 9 new holes and another 9 on the way.
Dalat Palace Golf Club, a mile-high gem, the only wall-to-wall bentgrass course in Southeast Asia, laid out in the 1920s for Bao Dai, the last emperor of Vietnam.
Ocean Dunes Golf Club, a wind-swept Nick Faldo design, a “tropical links” lapped by the warm waters of the South China Sea.
Dong Nai Golf Resort, a breathtaking, 27-hole track laid out by American Ward Northrup, whose design skirts a scenic chain of natural lakes.
Vietnam Golf & Country Club, home to 36 pristine, otherwise private holes just 20 minutes from downtown Ho Chi Minh City.
King’s Island Country Club, Hanoi’s oldest club and home to two 18s that play over some of the finest, most diverse golfing terrain in Southeast Asia.

Award-Winning Filmmakers To Shoot Big Screen Feature in Indonesia

(PRWEB) July 9, 2004

Golden Globe Award Winner LeBrocquy-Fraser Productions (Osama) and Director U-Wei Bin HajiSaari (Kaki Bakar aka The Arsonist – un Certain Regard Cannes 1995) are collaborating on a film based on Joseph Conrad’s first novel, Almayer’s Folly.

Adapted for the big screen by U-Wei, the story is set in 1850′s Borneo (Kalimantan, Indonesia) and offers adventure, romance and drama as it depicts the colorful characters that lived and traded along the rivers of Borneo during that visually rich period.

Accompanied by the Bali Film Commission (BFC), the team completed an extensive week-long trip sponsored by Indonesia’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Garuda Indonesia Airlines and Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel that encompassed parts of southern and eastern Kalimantan.

Unlike previous films adapted from Conrad novels, U-Wei feels strongly that Almayer’s Folly stay true to the locations in the original story. “For me, authentic locations are critical to the success of this film,” says the sirector, who returns next month to explore other Kalimantan locations.

A native of Pahang, Malaysia, U-Wei is the first Malaysian director invited to show his work at the prestigious Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes (’95).

Award winning American actor Harvey Keitel (The Piano, Pulp Fiction, Red Dragon) has signed on as lead character Almayer. “Everyone is passionate about this project,” says Julia Fraser (Partner, LeBrocquy-Fraser Productions). “We sent Harvey the script and within three days he was committed to the film.”

Reflecting the different ethnic cultures characterized in the script, U-Wei brings onboard strong regional talent from Malaysia (Eman Manan, Khalled Salleh) and Indonesia (Christine Hakim, El Manik). Producers also are in discussions with world-renowned actor Omar Sharif to play in the film and look to cast the key role of Almayer’s 20-year-old daughter Nina in Indonesia

The US$ 5 million film will bring together a well-crafted international ensemble of talent including; production designer Desmond Crowe (UK) (Band of Brothers) and director of photography Alain Choquart (France) (Boesman, Lena and Captain Conan).

Established in 2002, BFC is the first internationally sanctioned body of its kind in Indonesia working to present the advantages of filming in the country. According to BFC founder Deborah Gabinetti, “Almayer’s Folly has the potential to contribute millions of dollars to the local economies while providing a fantastic showcase for Kalimantan and an excellent opportunity to work with one of Southeast Asia’s best directors.”

Last month BFC met with Director Marc Esposito and Producer Pierre Javaux of the 2003 box office success ‘Le Coeur des Hommes’ (Frenchmen) to discuss their upcoming feature film. Starring French heartthrob Marc Lavoine, the film entitled ‘Toute la Beaute’ du Monde’ (All the Beauty of the World) will commence shooting on Bali and Lombok late 2004.
